RESIDENTIAL- Houses: These are individual homes where people live. They can be single-family houses or multi-family houses like duplexes. Apartments: Buildings with multiple units where different families live in separate spaces within the same structure.

INFRASTRUCTURES-Bridges: Structures built to span obstacles like rivers or roads, allowing people and vehicles to cross. Roads: Paths and highways designed for vehicles to travel on.

COMMERCIAL- Offices: Buildings where people work, such as office towers and business centers. Retail Stores: Structures where goods are sold, including shopping malls, supermarkets, and small shops.

RELIGIOUS- Churches, Temples, Mosques: Places where people go to worship and practice their religion.

INDUSTRIAL- Factories: Large buildings where products are manufactured. Warehouses: Structures used to store goods before they are distributed to stores or customers.

RECREATIONAL- Parks and Playgrounds: Areas for outdoor activities and play. Stadiums: Large venues where sports events and concerts are held.

INSTITUTIONAL- Schools: Buildings designed for educational purposes, ranging from elementary schools to universities. Hospitals: Facilities for medical treatment and care, including hospitals and clinics.

TRANSPORTATION-Airports: Facilities where airplanes take off and land, and passengers can board and disembark. Train Stations: Buildings where trains stop to pick up and drop off passengers.

SPECIAL PURPOSE- Skyscrapers: Very tall buildings usually found in cities, used for offices, apartments, or hotels. Historical Monuments: Structures built to commemorate significant historical events or figures.

Just like how architects draw plans and engineers use their expertise, kids can dive into the world of construction by sketching their designs and experimenting with different materials. Use the process below to have the children constuct a building from start to finish to learn the steps of the construction process. It doesn't need to be a house, maybe some kids would like to make a school, office, store, etc.

1. Planning and Designing:
Architect's Drawing:
Blueprints: Architects create blueprints, which are detailed drawings showing what the building will look like from all sides. They include rooms, doors, windows, and sometimes even furniture placement.
Designing Fun: Kids can try drawing their own house or a simple building on paper, thinking about what rooms they want and where to put them.

Engineer’s Plan:
Safety First: Engineers make sure the building will be safe and strong. They figure out how to build it so it won't fall down, even in strong winds or earthquakes.
Real-Life Examples: Show pictures of famous buildings and talk about how engineers helped design them to be safe. As children work on their buildings have them dress the part. Hard hats, construction cones and safety jackets for dramatic play.

2. Preparing the Site:
Clearing the Land:
Big Machines: Bulldozers, excavators, and other machines clear the land by removing trees, rocks, and old buildings.
Role-Playing: Kids can use toy trucks and diggers in a sandbox or sensory bin/table to pretend they're preparing a construction site. Experiment with level vs. non-level ground.

Digging:
Foundation Pits: Big holes are dug where the building's foundation will go. Sometimes they dig trenches for pipes and other utilities too.
Learning Shapes: Use this opportunity to talk about different shapes and how they fit together, like rectangles for foundation pits.

3. Building the Foundation:

5. Adding Walls and Roof:

Creative Crafts: Kids can use cardboard and boxes to create walls in their building using their blueprint.

Roof:
Protection from Weather: The roof protects the building from rain and snow. It can be flat or sloped and made from shingles, metal, or tiles.
Design a Roof: Kids can experiment with different types of roofs and think about which ones would be best for rainy or snowy places. Play with slopes and materals.

6. Installing Windows and Doors:
Windows:
Letting in Light: Windows let light and air into the building. They can be different shapes and sizes.
Transparency Fun: Use clear plastic sheets to make pretend windows in the building. Take it further and do an experiment using multiple layers for the windows or other instalation materials and test/record by using a thermometer.

Doors:
Entryways: Doors allow people to enter and leave. They can be big or small, plain or fancy.
Crafting Doors: Kids can cut out paper/carbbord and glue them onto their buildings in and out.

7. Plumbing and Electricity:
Plumbers and Electricians:
Pipes and Wires: Plumbers install pipes for water, and electricians install wires for lights and outlets.
Safety Lesson: Teach kids why it’s important to have clean water and electricity in buildings.
Simple Circuits: Show kids a simple circuit with a battery and light bulb to explain how electricity works.

8. Finishing the Inside:
Drywall and Paint:
Smooth Walls: Drywall covers the inside walls, and then they are painted. This makes rooms look nice and clean.
Painting Fun: Provide small brushes and paint for kids to decorate the rooms in their structure.

Floors:
Different Types: Floors can be made from wood, carpet, or tiles. Each type feels different underfoot.

9. Outside Work:

Outer Shell: Siding, stone, brick is added to the outside walls, and then they are painted to protect from weather.
Exterior Design: Kids can use different materials and colors of materials for the outside of their structures. Maybe have families bring in photos of their own houses so they can mimic where they live.

10. Final Touches:

Checking Everything: Inspectors check the building to make sure everything is built correctly and safely.
Pretend Inspection: Kids can role-play as inspectors, checking their or the other childrens buildings for stability and safety.

Cleaning:
Ready for Use: Builders clean up the site, making sure everything is neat and tidy.
Clean-Up Time: Teach kids about the importance of cleaning up after playtime and/or have them clean up their model houses/buildings.

11. Move-In:
Furniture:
Making It Home: People bring in furniture and decorations to make the building comfortable and functional.
Mini Furniture: Use small toys or recycled craft materials to create furniture for cardboard houses.

Ready to Use:
Opening Day: Now the building is ready for people to live in or work in!
Grand Opening: Have a "grand opening" ceremony for the kids' completed projects, celebrating their hard work. Make it a family event and invite families to see their structures. Take it a step further and use all the childrens buildings and have them put them all together to create a classroom city. Now the children can learn about URBAN/CITY PLANNING-as they build roads and bridges to connect them all.

12. Maintenance:
Now that the childrens model structures are complete-thats not it! Now they need to keep them safe and in good condition.

Regular Check-Ups:
Routine Inspections: Just like people go to the doctor for check-ups, buildings need to be checked regularly to make sure everything is working well.
Pretend Inspections: Kids can pretend to be maintenance workers, checking for any "problems" in their block buildings.

Cleaning:
Daily Cleaning: Buildings need to be cleaned regularly to keep them looking nice and to keep everyone healthy.
Fun Cleaning: Kids can use toy brooms and dusters to clean their play areas.

Fixing Problems:
